Plant Name: Redbud
Scientific Name: Cercis texensis or canadensis
Description: Fast growing and pest resistant, redbuds are not too picky about soil or location, doing equally as well under the light shade of a pine as in the hot middle of a sunny island flowerbed. They can be bought or trained as either a single or multi-trunk tree. The leaves are glossy green, heart shaped and deciduous (bare in the winter) with fall leaf color normally in the yellow family. Redbud trees have a beautiful umbrella form that make them a perfect candidate to spread over a patio or deck. Wildlife: early nectar source for returning butterflies, for moths and for bees; seeds a favorite of many bird species and foliage browsed by deer and larval host plant to Henry’s Elfin.
