Being Resourceful

I am a very resourceful person even when it comes to gardening.  In front of our home is a raised rock planter.  I’ve never had much luck with anything except Impatiens because it is full shade and well drained.  It also blocks part of the view from a picture window in the dinning room as well as giving the front porch a closed in feeling.

So being the resourceful person I am, my Spring Break project became removal of the raised rock planter.  The dirt was very good in the planter and I loved the rock.  After some thought, I decided to build a new flowerbed in my yard using the rock for the edging and dirt to fill in for a raised bed.  I even recruited my 5-year-old son to help me work.  He had so much fun playing in the dirt he did not realize it was work.

The end result was a beautiful raised rock flowerbed with Encore Azaleas and a very open roomy porch.  The only cost I had were for the 3 Encore Azaleas I purchased and some mulch.  I even have a nice stock pile of dirt and rock for another future project.

So next time you want to change up some things in your yard, look around and see what you have to work with first.  You might be surprised.
